The sound of jackboots

Germany's new minister of defense, Karl-Theodor Guttenberg (no relation) declared today that he aims to make military deployment on foreign territory "a matter of course" for the German Bundeswehr, failing to add, "Screw the constitution!" Twenty years after reunification, Germany's significance in a globalized world has grown, he continued.
Guttenberg's comments come almost exactly ten years after the day Joseph Fischer, then Germany's minister of foreign affairs, defended the Bundeswehr's participation in the war against Yugoslavia by candidly comparing Kosovo to Auschwitz.

If you happen to be among those people who think that Germans have 'learned from their past', you're right: we have. And this is what we've come up with.
Be assured: Germany's power elite aren't any more moral or responsible than their counterparts elsewhere. They're just very, very patient.

WMFW created a little bit of a buzz after their first, and to my knowledge, only, album had come out--only to drop off the radar soon after. I don't know what happened; according to their neglected mySpace page, they are "working on new material" and apparently still playing shows.

Be that as it may, here is the opening track from 'Last Year's Junk', a country/electro/indie rock ballad about cowboys, rockets and satellites. What more can you ask for.

Bran Van 3000's 'Glee' is one of my all-time favorite albums, and one of the very few I've never grown tired of even for a little while, in more than a decade. Everybody here has probably heard 'Couch Surfer' and 'Drinking in L.A.', so I picked the track that I think best exemplifies the overall sound of the album, 'Forest'. Please enjoy.

Another CD I bought on impulse a good while ago, and another slight disappointment it turned out to be as well. Even though it's not an entirely boring idea in principle--to try and make mid-20th-century American music in 21st century Germany and see what happens--the results, for the most part, strike me as pretty dull. None of the eleven songs on 'Geraldine Penny' are actually bad, most of them are just pretty forgettable.
'Sweet Potato Pie', however, stands out thanks to its simple and compact structure, driving rhythm, and over the top female vocals. Please enjoy.

Another CD I once bought on impulse at a used record store. Beth Hirsch is best known for contributing female vocals to AIR's debut album, 'Moon Safari', especially the single, 'All I Need'.
'Titles & Idols' is a rather unremarkable album in my opinion, not bad by a long shot, but there's simply nothing on it that "sticks". The opening track is kind of nice, but I picked this remix of it to upload here, because it just sounds *so* 2001. Please enjoy.

A humorous little song about gender roles. When I saw it performed live a couple of years back, I realized that it aims for sexy a lot more than I'd suspected. Beate Lech, pictured below, does sexy rather well.
